Sally Ellis Fletcher is UMKC’s Associate Dean of Student Services for the School of Nursing and Health Studies, where the ATTC and PTTC Network Coordinating Offices are housed. Dr. Fletcher is a friend and colleague who has focused her career on culturally appropriate nursing care and education. She shared with us that she is calling this period of our history, “the illumination of racism in America.” According to Merriam-Webster, illuminate means to supply or brighten with light, to enlighten spiritually or intellectually, to make clear as in elucidate, and to bring to the fore as in highlight. We all have a role to play during this illumination – as individuals with unique histories and experiences and as part of our personal and professional communities. In order to help all of us think about how to apply the lessons about racial inequity in the United States that have been brought to the fore in the past month to our work as Technology Transfer Centers, the TTC Network Coordinating Offices offer the attached document. We hope each TTC will find this tool helpful to analyze your structure and activities with a racial equity lens.
