Ways of dealing with bereavement and grief are influenced by the norms of one’s cultural identity. In our current environment, many have experienced loss resulting from various circumstances that can include migration related impacts, natural disasters, conflict, persecution, family separation, etc. These challenges fall under what is considered Cultural Bereavement, and can increase stress and further place people at risk for substance use and traumatic experiences, in particular during grief and adjustment periods.  This interactive training will use a cultural lens to explore the intersects of grief and trauma and other impacting factors prevalent among communities of color, including immigrants and refugees, and how it can underscore substance use. Content will review how culturally conducive, trauma informed approaches are appropriate for rapport building, screening and care interactions with racial and ethnic communities struggling with substance use associated with grief, trauma, and stress.  TRAINER: Diana Padilla, MCPC, CARC, CASAC-T CREDITS: This training meets the requirements for three renewal hours (CASAC, CPP, CPS) and three initial hours (CPP, CPS) through New York State’s Office of Addiction Services and Supports (NYS OASAS).       Integrating a Trauma-Informed Approach in Behavioral Health Settings (TIA) Enhanced Professional Learning   DESCRIPTION Over the past 20 years, a growing understanding of the pervasive and harmful impact of traumatic events on individuals, families, and communities has led to the emergence of research on the effects of trauma and treatment strategies to address mental health and substance use disorders. According to SAMSHA, trauma is a widespread, harmful, and costly public health problem, occurring because of violence, abuse, neglect, loss, disaster, war, and other emotionally harmful experiences. While many people who experience a traumatic event do not have lasting negative effects, others experience more difficulty with traumatic stress reactions. Research has documented the relationship between exposure to traumatic events and substance use. For example, approximately 20%-90% of individuals with a substance use disorder (SUD) have a history of childhood trauma and 37% to 52% have a posttraumatic stress disorder diagnosis (Mergler et al, 2018). When it comes to trauma, there are no boundaries regarding age, gender, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, geography, or sexual orientation. This online learning series will increase the skill level of behavioral health professionals to define and recognize trauma in individuals. Helping individuals affected by trauma to manage their symptoms using a strength-based approach minimizes re-traumatization and enhances practitioners’ ability to provide trauma-informed support. DESCRIPTION Xylazine (or “tranq”) is a non-opioid sedative and tranquilizer only approved for use in veterinary medicine. However, over the past several years, human consumption of xylazine has begun rapidly increasing. Although initially only identified in illicit drug supplies in limited areas, xylazine has been found in 48 states as of April 2023. Xylazine is frequently, though not exclusively, used in conjunction with opioids, particularly fentanyl—due to xylazine’s ability to prolong their effects. Xylazine use presents many potential dangers to people, including an increased risk of overdose and the development of necrotizing tissue damage. This webinar will bring together experts from across disciplines to discuss the history of xylazine use, what is known about its current scope of use and consequences, the effects of xylazine on people, and wound care and other harm reduction strategies. It will also offer an opportunity for participants to ask questions in a roundtable panel discussion format. OBJECTIVES Describe Xylazine and its history of use and consequences. Explain how harm reduction strategies need to be adapted for complications in Xylazine use. Describe the current trends that detail the scope and the extent of the Xylazine issue.
