Summer Focus on Problem Gambling Session #3: Cultural Humility When Addressing Gambling and Gambling-Related Harms

Presenter: Tana Russell, SUDP, NCTTP, WSCGC-II, CGT, Assistant Director, Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling

Gambling has, in some way, been a part of most cultures since time immemorial. And in the present day, video gaming is a ‘global uniter’ in many countries around the world. This session will focus on lessons learned on important cultural considerations for behavioral health providers to take into account as they have gambling- or gaming- related conversations, be that with clients or the general public. The intention of this session is to equip the behavioral health provider with tools to be able to integrate conversations about gambling and gaming, by creating a “safe space” to talk about them with cultural humility and sensitivity.

Learning Goals:

  • Discuss the role of gambling and gaming in various cultures (with attention to such factors as race, age, gender, socioeconomic status, etc.) and cultural influences on views of games, luck, and fate.
  • Discuss the cultures that exist within the context of gambling and video gaming, and problem gambling impacts on marginalized populations.
  • Discuss lessons learned in cultural humility and sensitivity, the importance of language, pronunciation, imagery, and more.
