The New England ATTC in partnership with the Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Addiction Services is providing a targeted technical assistance workshop titled “The Impact of Racism and Violence on Communities” on 1/19/24 from 9:00am to 4:00pm with subject matter expert Brenda Westberry. When faced with racism, we need to address the systemic obstacles to equal opportunitied and equal justice. Racism persists and its affects can be devastating. Where an individual lives, works, and plays ultimately affects their ability to achieve healthy outcomes. If violence is a part of this image, it diminishes the quality of that outcome. Violence is a public health issue that has to be addressed. Trauma is at the forefront of racism and violence. Systemic biases affect each of us and prevent us from achieving out full potential as a culture and community. The epidemic of violence affects not only the individual victim of violence or perpetrator of violence but impacts the entire community. In this training, the participant will explore racism, our history, culture, government-lead policies and other factors beyond individual choice that have impacted racism and violence in our communities. The National Alliance on Mental Illness recognizes that current environmental factors are traumatizing people of color, which as a risk factor can also initiate or increase substance use and potentially developing trauma and stress complications. Provider bias in stigmatic language or other microaggressions affect a person’s capacity to respond to clinical interventions and are often identified in research as components of poor behavioral health outcomes.  Practitioners who integrate cultural humility in practice are able to support the highest levels of person-centered culturally-informed care. This interactive training will review practical tools and strategies for providers to identify and diffuse personal bias, review how dynamics of culture can be integrated in care, and how cultural humility can lead to culturally responsive care meeting the unique needs of diverse community members.

Contingency management is the evidence-based behavioral intervention associated with the most robust evidence for effectively treating individuals with a stimulant use disorder (StimUD). Contingency management provides monetary incentives (such as gift cards) for meeting treatment goals, including stimulant non-use as measured by negative point-of-care urine drug tests (UDTs), rewarding individuals for changing their behaviors. Substance use offers a powerful, immediate reinforcement. Contingency management confronts this challenge by offering immediate financial awards that can help activate the brain’s reward system, thus encouraging the replacement of stimulants with the incentive to achieve a dopamine release. This 90-minute webinar is designed to provide a broad overview of contingency management for treating individuals with a stimulant use disorder (StimUD). Ample time will be provided for group discussion and audience Q&A.

Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based practice that uses a preventive public health approach to identify and intervene with persons whose pattern of use put them at risk for, or are experiencing, substance-related health and psychosocial problems. SBIRT can also be useful in identifying those with a high likelihood for a substance use disorder. As an effective intervention, SBIRT helps to reduce harmful levels of substance use in health and behavioral health settings.

According to research, 1 in 3 people see little need for preventive care and have low interest in health education. These dynamics are associated with poor patient/client and program outcomes. A key factor of patient/client outcomes refers to how engaged they are in their care.  This interactive training will focus on core principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI) for person centered engagement, and aligning with culturally and linguistically appropriate, trauma informed strategies. This introductory content explores all the basic tenets and theoretical elements of MI as opportunities to enhance interactions and effectively engage individuals in their own wellness process.

Despite the demands of a profession in the health and behavioral health care disciplines, providers are dedicated to their craft and enjoy a deep satisfaction from helping others. But with the job are pressures and at times unanticipated factors that can increase susceptibility to exhaustion leading to compassion fatigue and other occupational hazards, referred to as “the cost of caring for others.”   The adverse effects of compassion fatigue can decrease the provider’s emotional and physical well-being, influence the quality of care they provide for their clients, and have a profound effect on service delivery and person-centered care with communities served. This interactive webinar will help to identify often elusive work-related conditions that promote empathy strain, self-assessment tools and practical prevention strategies for self-care and means to resiliency and wellness for us, the people helping people.
