Mid-America ATTC has produced a number of interactive online courses on a variety of topics relevant to substance use disorder professionals. See below for a list of our offerings:
- Behavioral Health and Substance Use Awareness in the Workplace: This 1.5 hour course is designed to educate employers and employees about mental health and substance use issues that may arise in the workplace and how to manage them. It is not designed for the mental health professional, and this series does not train the viewer to diagnose, only to recognize and respond. Behavioral health and substance use are common occurrences. Everyone in the workplace can make an impact by learning more about these conditions, working to reduce stigma, and learning how to talk to a coworker who might be struggling and help them to access supportive resources.
This presentation was prepared for the Mid-America Addiction Technology Center (Mid-America ATTC), Mid-America Mental Health Technology Transfer Center (Mid-America MHTTC), and the Mid-America Prevention Technology Transfer Center (Mid-America PTTC) under a cooperative agreement from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
- Primary Care for Substance Use Disorder Professionals: This 1.5-hour, self-paced course is designed for treatment professionals considering career opportunities in primary care. The course provides resources and information to help professionals decide whether working in a primary care setting is right for them.
- Tour of Motivational Interviewing: An Interprofessional Road Map for Behavior Change: This 4-hour course is on Motivational Interviewing (MI), a form of collaborative conversation for strengthening a person’s own motivation and commitment to change by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. This course takes learners on a tour of the essential skills used to strengthen an individual’s motivation for behavioral change.
- SBIRT for Health and Behavioral Health Professionals: This 3.5-hour, self-paced course is for health, oral health, and behavioral health students and professionals. Learners will take part in an interactive, simulated new employee orientation on SBIRT (screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment for substance use) in a fictional healthcare center. Participants will apply and test their knowledge through interactive games, case scenarios, and quizzes following each module. The goal of this course is to help participants develop their knowledge, skills, and abilities in using SBIRT as an intervention with patients.
- Understanding Substance Use Disorders: This 2-hour, self-paced course provides a science-based introduction to substance use, substance use disorders (SUD), and SUD treatment. It was designed for undergraduate, graduate, and health professions students and practitioners who do not have a background in addictions.
- America’s Opioid Epidemic: Origins, Challenges, and Strategic Initiatives: J. Paul Seale, MD, Certified by the American Boards of Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine, discusses America’s ongoing opioid epidemic. By the end of this program, participants should be able to: 1) identify several key developments in the origin of the opioid epidemic, 2) describe strategic initiatives that are in progress to address the epidemic, and 3) identify specific steps forward that could help address the epidemic.
